February 10, 2007 - Sweden
Wins the World Cup of Poker.
Sweden pulled off a shocking
victory last week to win the Nations Poker Cup. In the
final match Anders Henriksson (Sweden) was short staked
playing heads up against the USA team captain Robert
Williamson who held 88 percent of the chips in play.
It was Henriksson cool headed
play that got the Swedes the victory. After doubling up
once he grinded it out for several hours to finally beat
Williamson. When the tournament was over Williamson was so
disappointed he said “I don’t need a bar, I need a
doctor”.
Sweden captain Bo Sehlstedt
said: "I have won bigger sums of money but this is a real
career highlight, I am so proud of my team. Anders is one
of the best players around right now, he just doesn't seem
to lose. Even when we were almost out I was scared but
confident that Anders can beat anybody shorthanded even
from such a weak position."
Sweden’s team consisted of
captain Bo Sehlstedt, 2006 WSOP winners Anders Henriksson
and Mats Rahm, pro players Johan Storakers and William
Thorsson and an online qualifier named Hans Isoz.
The American team was made up
of professional players who need little introduction:
Robert Willimason, Phil Laak, Antonio Esfandiari, Clonie
Gowen, Kevin O'Donnell and Hollywood actress Jennifer
Tilly
All Nations competing had an
online qualifier participate except for the USA where
Jennifer Tilly filled this role. USA players are not
allowed to play at PartyPoker which is why no online
qualifier was used.
Through out much of the
tournament the Great Brittan team, lead by Dave “Devil
Fish” Ulliott had the lead. The USA team ran away with it
in the later stages only to fall to the Swedes in the end.
The Nations Poker Cup is a
televised annual event sponsored by PartyPoker.com
A PartyPoker.com spokesman
said: "If you were to ask any pro who the two strongest
poker nations in the world were right now, most would say
the USA and Sweden, and this tournament is evidence that
this is the case. It was a great spectacle and will make
compelling television."
The first team eliminated this
year was Germany.
We congratulate the Swedes on
their accomplishments and look forward to seeing the
televised coverage.
