April 12, 2007 - Irishman Marty Smyth wins Irish Poker Open

An Irishman named Marty Smyth just pulled off a large upset to claim the Irish Poker Open title which came with a cash prize of €650,000. In order to gain this title he had to go through a very strong final table which included Roland De Wolfe (who recently won a major tournament in Dublin – An EPT event) and internet poker wizard Sorel Mizzi who is still to young to play in U.S. tournaments.

A lot of top professionals entered this tournament such as David Benyamine, Surinder Sunar, Mike Sexton, Andy Black, Ram Vaswani, Dan Harrington and David "Devilfish" Ulliott. Despite the strong presence of online professionals in the field of over 700 players it was the home field players who were successful in this tournament.

The final 9 players had 5 players from Ireland including the eventual champion Marty Smyth.

In the end it came down to accomplished pro Roland De Wolfe and Marty Smyth. On the final hand Smyth caught a set of twos on the turn to crack Wolfes pocket 3’s.

The top 72 players were paid at least $4,261. The 6 finalist earned:

·  Marty Smyth, $873,546

·  Roland De Wolfe, $433,733

·  Sorel Mizzi, $280,284

·  Danny McHugh, $233,570

·  Brian O’Keefe, $173,509

·  Nicky Power, $133,469
